 Websites Explained

Static Websites

Static Websites are exactly what it says, "Static", it never changes unless someone opens an application on a computer somewhere in the world and make changes to one of the pages, safe the changes and re-publish the page to the hosting server.
If the pages are not published they will never be visible to the millions of internet users.

The limitations of these type of website is that you, as the owner, can not easily update the site and you can not use it for e-commerce.
These type of sites are usually done by "Web Designers"

Web Design

Is the process of "developing" the actual look and feel of the website.
This would include

  • The logo's and banners
  • The colours used
  • Layout of the different pages
  • Adding static content to the pages.

Dynamic Websites

These are sites that changes on a regular basis, with or without any intervention from the site owner or developer.
Can be hourly or daily updates, for example sites like BBC or ebay. It can also be company websites that manufacture or sell certain products.

Other types of dynamic sites are forums, blogs, photo galleries, networking sites...

In essence, a dynamic website has a program (application), installed on the hosting server that was developed by a programmer. The site owner or users uses this program (application) to do whatever they want to do on the website.
These type of websites can range from simple 1 page sites to sites that has 1000's of pages of content.
These type of sites are usually done by as team consisting many different people with different tasks.
For the purpose of this article we will stick to "Web Designers" and "Web Developers"

Web Development

Is the process of "developing" a dynamic website that can easily be updated by the owner from anywhere in the world by using an online user interface to add or update any content of the website. The content can be added to the site by the owner, special feeds called"RSS feeds" and registered site users.

These type of sites are "scripted" (programmed) using scripting languages (programming language) and integrated with a database to store the information you or any of the users add to the website.
The most commonly used scripting language in use for internet applications (programs) are php (hypertext preprocessor) and MySql databases

Development Cost

As you can imagine, these types of websites can be pretty expensive to develop. Usually anything from 100's to 1000's of whatever currency your are using in your particular corner of the world.
Then you need more funding to ensure the site is properly maintained and security patches developed and implemented as the hacker community discover new ways to break into your website.

How to save on development

There are a number of ready developed scripts that can be installed on any server. Examples is Joomla and Mambo. You only need to develop the "skin or template" to change the look and feel to suite your particular style and needs.
The problem with these "pre-build" applications is they are limited to what the developers think your will want to do with your site.

Yes there are "plug-ins" available to change the way the original application works or add further functionality, but that in itself brings more problems as the developer might not update the "plug-in" to ensure stability and security are maintained. The result can be a compromised website or hosting server.
